12 easy Tips to teach the Arabic Alphabet at home!

Teaching a second language at home can sometimes be challenging especially when teaching really young children. However, all you need is some fun and exciting ways! We’re sharing 12 easy tips to teach the Arabic Alphabet at home! With a combination of fun, games, storytelling, singing and arts and crafts – who said it can’t be fun? With the help of Yomna from@happyhomelearning we’re sharing some of our simple & easy (tried and tested) tips to teach the Arabic Alphabet at home! If your child is beyond this stage then your looking for the follow up post – How to start teaching your child to read Arabic at home!

1. Arabic Alphabet flashcards

To get started, you definitely need to have the Arabic Alphabet flashcards. We purchased the ones from Good word: Arabic Alphabet Flash Cards. They have the alphabet written on one side and a matching word with picture on the other side! We also like to keep a plain set of alphabet alphabet flashcards. These you can print on to card from here. We covered the Arabic letters with coloured sand – you can also use coloured glitter too. This is great for the children to trace over to practise letter formation. Practise learning the sounds before the name of the letter to help them recognise for reading!

2. Use a sand tray for letter formation

So as the children trace over the sand letters (mentioned above) they then attempt to write out the letters in a sand tray. This is a simple sensory way of getting the children confident in writing. All you need is some sand and a tray. I used my trusty Ferraro Roche tray box.

3. Find the letter

Using our magnetic Arabic Letter Connector by Ilm Box we ask the children to find the letter amongst a selection of letters. This is for letter recognition – to see if they can remember how many dots, what shape the letter is etc.

4. Using everyday objects

When we introduce new objects we tend to find objects we have at home or in our play rooms and even pictures. This way children can hold or play with the objects while learning the new names in the Arabic Language. (Sign up to our newsletter below to receive a FREE vocabulary sheet for each letter of the Arabic Alphabet to help you get started with your teaching!)

5. Arabic Alphabet songs

Children love singing! So we use some of the songs we found on YouTube  including this simple Alphabet song and this Arabic alphabet rhyme with vocabulary and sing them in our sessions! We use ones that include vocabulary and then invent our own songs with the vocabulary we are using for that particular letter to help our children remember the new vocabulary.

6. Teaching order

Remember you don’t have to teach the letter alphabetically. Start with easier sounds like ba, jeem, laam etc – the same we don’t always teach the letters in order in phonics. However, like phonics, it is best to begin with the letter sounds that the names for reading.

7. Arabic letter games

Learning through games is so much fun for your child. We printed and laminated these cool mazes from Home Play School – check out her website for more Free Arabic Resources including playdough mats!

8. Gambian Mommy Resources

Gambian Mommy produces some brilliant, fun and colourful resources for our kids’ Arabic learning journeys! You have to check out her wonderful creations over on at her page here. In the meantime, the ones we use and found our children loved were the Alphabet puzzle vocabulary pictures and the peg the matching vocabulary.

9. Using Playdough Cutters

Play dough is the most calming time with my girls. They love using play dough so we love incorporating it into our Arabic Lessons with these fab play dough cutters by the Desi Doll Company! You can use the cutters to make the letters you are learning that week and they also come in handy when your children are moving on to letter connecting too!

10. Arabic letter crafts

Arts and Crafts is always a fun activity, so we always try to tie in the craft to the vocabulary or letter of that week. In the case of the Jeem below, the children were to stick orange paper on the jeem which represents a carrot. (See video below for more!)

11. Make up Arabic vocabulary stories

To recap our vocabulary for the letter we learnt, we practised over them by making up stories and drawing pictures to aid us. Check out the video below for more!

12. Make an Arabic Wall at home

Learning displays are more than just making the rooms pretty! You can actively refer to them in your sessions by displaying the Arabic alphabet poster. Put up the children’s letter craft and any other learning aids you use! We have started making ours again below!

Check out our Arabic Alphabet Teaching Tips video below!

Resources including vocabulary to teach with each letter, and Arabic Letter writing sheets are available to download for FREE below! Enjoy!

So for some time we’ve avoided mental maths on p So for some time we’ve avoided mental maths on purpose - working out in our heads causes us a little worry before we even see the questions.
.
So we did it slowly - with small addition and easy multiplication along the years when we felt like it . But was it consistent? Not really! And then this summer came where the girls were happy to dig into these @cgpbooks.uk and I thought Cool time to bring some Mental Maths back. And wow what an emotional rollercoaster it has been. But alhamdulillah alhamdulillah we are getting there. You know that saying it’s never the child who’s a bad student but the teacher (I don’t know if that’s how the saying goes, but making a point here) so ye bad teacher 👋- I forgot to teach and work on the strategies for mental maths - I focussed on ‘But you’re great at maths what’s the issue here?!’ 🙈🙈
.
So we’ve nailed a few good strategies that are working alhamdulillah - definitely hoping to share more as we work more on this soon.
.
.
Now it’s your turn- what’s maths teaching and learning like in your home? Do you like teaching it? Do you avoid certain stuff? Tips for mental maths welcome 😅

There’s something beautiful about planting a see There’s something beautiful about planting a seed. We follow the instructions, with the knowledge we have about planting seeds - but the results - only Allah knows!
.
Same concept can be applied to all things in life - raising and nurturing your child for example but it’s Allah that determines their future. Just like the seed we can give them our utmost attention and care at the beginning and watch them grow. But at some point, like that plant will grow into a tree standing firmly on its roots - the foundation - same applies to our children as they grow up to be their own person standing up independently - we are but gardeners and nurturers ☺️
.
.
Swipe to see some of the wonderful fruit and veg growing in our garden this summer alhamdulillah- really excited to see 14 apples on our apple tree 🍎 in sha Allah they grow fully for us to try at the end of summer.

Hope you’re all having a lovely weekend 🌱

In my journey with Mama Teaches Me Resources - One In my journey with Mama Teaches Me Resources - One of the first series I created was the MTM Hajj Series. It was such an important one for my children to understand especially as it was so close to home in Makkah alhdmdulillah.

I wanted my children to understand the importance of Eid ul Adha and this important pillar for Muslims. With my girls being so young, I had to come up with a fun and easy, visual way of them understanding and learning about the pilgrimage of Hajj. And so I created the Mama Teaches Me - The Hajj Game. With hand drawn drawings, this unique and simple game takes your children on the journey of the blessed pilgrimage in the form of a board game, with lots of learning along the way.

It's the perfect way to get your children excited about the blessed days of Dhul Hijjah and a great point to start learning for yourself too.

It’s been quite some time since I took a book ou It’s been quite some time since I took a book out of the library for myself since motherhood (ok minus all the years I’ve been in Saudi) but still, I’ve only ever bought on kindle or from Amazon or bookshops. But borrowing from the library this time took me back to my weekly library trips with my siblings and mum. And just like those times I’d have read half or flicked through most of the books within a few days!
.
Living up-to my childhood tradition I was determined to get stuck into this book immediately- I’ve seen it recommended enough.
.
At 5am this morning I woke up to my youngest feeling a little poorly since last night, and then I remembered the half finished book. I’ve literally just finished it and cried like a baby at the end.
.
The books protagonist is Inspired by a Syrian Beekeeper who now resides in the UK - the stories of loss for refugees and those affected by war are so real. SubhanAllah we can’t even begin to imagine and this book and many others like it give us the smallest peek into what they suffer.
.
Highly recommend this book - buy it, borrow it, read it - really well written and couldn’t put it down!
.
Now onto my next book - any recommendations? Going to see if my local library have it - 📚 @asma_scribendi @letslearnmama

The girls used the Picture This app (swipe for more) to label the pictures of the plants and flowers we took photos of (thanks @homeschoolingmands for your pics too)
.
It was a lovely way to find out more about the flowers and plants and find out which climate they grew in by remembering where we saw them at Kew too.
.
Since the girls have become wildlife watchers with their new books - they’ve spotted a bunch of birds and insects in the garden and are determined to carry on (all because I gave them wildlife watcher badges from @thewildlifetrusts 😄)
.
In the mean time we’ve also kept some of our learning to cpg works books which means I get a break from preparing it all and it’s a great recap of what they already learnt or completely forgotten!
.
.
Are you homeschooling over the summer or taking a break? I feel because we’ve had random breaks over the year (travelling and moving countries) we’ve got some bits to catch up on and a little bit each day in the summer holidays will work out nicely for us .

At our recent visit to Kew Gardens we were fortunate to see the wonderful yet eye opening recycled trolls sculptures highlighting eating together, food waste and eating a more plant based diet - swipe to read more. It certainly inspired us to be more mindful about food waste - Art like this speaks volumes creates the impact and reminder we need to make the small changes we can!
.
The Forever Food Exhibition at @kewgardens is definitely worth the visit. For us, it was a great follow up to our food topic (which finally came to an end after 3 weeks of cooking with the kids full on 😅), thinking about food waste was huge. Over the years the girls and I have had discussions about eating all the barakah on our plates, giving left overs to the birds etc. We are yet to get into composting though! Starting mid June we have finally started our #30dayswildchallenge with @thewildlifetrusts - although I think we’ll be extending our nature studies all the way through summer ☀️ iA

.
Swipe to read some of what we saw at the exhibition- the lab grown meat was definitely eye opening and makes you think lots of about the guidance we get in our Islamic Faith about what’s halal and tayyib (permissible and pure/ organic)

.
So whilst making spaghetti 🍝 and creating the video for the reel, we also had some recipe writing going on! It was a lot of work and spaghetti making felt like a chore all of a sudden! 🙈
.
The kitchen, which was once my place to be away with my thoughts, listen to lectures and enjoy some alone time, was taken over by the kids- it doesn’t help that isn’t so big either- but somehow we managed it in the end alhamdulillah 😅
.
There was however an interesting discussion on the instructions for recipe writing and why certain instructions are said a certain way and of course the detail you need to understand what to do in each process. At times it became frustrating for the eldest too - I’d recommend doing this a day later (which is how I’ve written it up in the plan - and this is why I only write up the topic plans and resources AFTER we’ve completed it so I can work around what actually worked and what we should have done instead for ease!)

The girls are absolutely obsessed with Lego and of course don’t remember their first trip to Legoland when they were both under 5 so they were super excited to be finally going again!
.
Although they were overwhelmed by the new VR ride Mythica (they had the eyes closed throughout the ride 😅) they haven’t stopped talking about the mythical fantasy beasts and animals that we saw!
.
They conquered their fears of the pirate ship and were totally shocked with how wet they got on the log flume 😂 (worse than Thorpe Park) lots of memories and fun alhamdulillah. The park closed at 4pm, however everyone spent another hour at the Legoland gift shop deciding what to buy.

Making sushi 🍣 🍱 . Another double firsts fo Making sushi 🍣 🍱
.
Another double firsts for the girls - making sushi and trying it - they literally gave the taste test 1/10 😂🙈 they are not fans of sushi at all ( I’m the fan) but they enjoyed the process of making it, they were exposed to new methods, new tastes and smells.
.
I, on the other hand am super happy I can now make my own home made sushi and experiment with my niece who actually LOVES sushi like me 😄 ( I did say our homeschool was about my interests too didn’t I 😅) I LOVED the taste test and can’t wait to make some more. All ingredients were found on Amazon - here’s what you’ll need:
.
🍣 bamboo mat (for rolling)
🍣 white/brown sushi rice
🍣 nori (roasted seaweed sheets)
🍣 veg/fish of choice for filling
🍣 pickled ginger
🍣 wasabi (optional)
🍣 soy sauce
🍣 rice vinegar (I just used apple cider vinegar)

A lot of the time our homeschool is about my learn A lot of the time our homeschool is about my learning as much as the kids. It’s my curiosity to see or do as much as theirs. So comes out my real excitement (like a big kid 😅) and theirs too.
.
Many decades ago I remember learning and later teaching fair trade and chocolate and looking a little at how chocolate was made and always thought it would be fascinating to make it from scratch with an actual cacao pod! From something we eat so regularly why have we barely accessed the fruit, the beans, the pod?!
.
So spent some time online searching for a fresh cacao pod within a reasonable price (this was under £20) this one’s from the Caribbean and bought on eBay 😅
.
.
The girls’s reaction to the cacao fruit was priceless - little one ran out of the room thinking she was expected to eat it 😂 we did taste the fruit - it’s a little like lychee and tastes really good - a little sour and sweet too. We had a little read of cacao pods in our new book too - Swipe to see pics 📸
.
.
We will be back to share more on the chocolate soon - in the mean time we still have fresh home made yogurt to make, sushi to roll and an experience of cooking outdoors - all quite flexible but need the good weather for the latter experience ☀️
.
.
Have you attempted to make chocolate at home? Do you ensure your homeschool is full of ways for you to learn and be curious too? I was telling the girls isn’t it fascinating to have been able to invent chocolate 🍫

One of our fave features of homeschooling is the l One of our fave features of homeschooling is the lifestyle we create that works for us. It’s in our time, great weather, making memories and connections and of course flexibility etc.

We love taking advantage of the weekdays for our days out to avoid the rush! The girls had their first proper dose of rock climbing today Alhamdulillah- loved their enthusiasm to try something new. Swipe to see the snaps 📸
.
.
We talk a lot about trying something new - whether it’s a new challenge or trying new foods. There are always different emotions attached - fear, nervousness, even anxiety due to a judgement or a perception that was made. Much of the time we realise we feel that way because it’s different and an unknown.
.
.
The lesson is really for us all - if we can look past our thoughts and have faith in ourselves to overcome the challenges by allowing ourselves to decide whether it’s for us or not with grace. If we can tell ourselves “we can” we have more opportunities in actually giving it a try!
.

🍍 EXOTIC FRUIT DAY 🍍 . The girls and I plan 🍍 EXOTIC FRUIT DAY 🍍
.
The girls and I planned an Exotic Fruit Day yesterday. We went out to our local markets in search of fruits we have never tried before! We wanted to guess how they’d look on the inside, how they would taste and more.
.
The girls were intrigued by the dragon fruit, papaya, passion fruit, apricot, golden kiwi, grapefruit and fig. They didn’t like the look of the custard apple at all - inside or out 🙈
.
It was a fantastic way to get the girls to try new fruits and marvel at Allahs magnificent creation subhanAllah. They learnt about taste buds and the tongue. Hands on practical learning - super easy and fun 🤩
.
.
So share with us- which of these fruits do you like the most and which are you yet to try? Comment below 👇 we’d love to know 😊
