Our top 6 Ramadan Book recommendations

Planet Omar by Zanib Mian

Planet Omar is a brilliant chapter book written by Zanib Mian. Although I’d originally bought it as a read aloud, my 6 year old loved reading it. She loved how funny it was and the fact that it was about a Muslim kid! The book goes through the life of Omar at his new school, a bully, Eid festivals and family. It’s a great one to buy for your kids getting into chapter books!

If Allah Wills by Dr. Oz

If Allah Wills is a beautiful book about young Faris who wants to go to the Ka’bah. Similar to children’s favourite ‘Whatever Next’, Faris sets on a journey to the Ka’bah and finds out what Muslims do there. The book is really well written with beautiful illustrations and a whole lot of imagination! This would be a great gift for families visiting for Umrah!

Bismillah Soup by Asmaa Hussein

Bismillah Soup has to be one of my girls’ favourite books. The story is about a young Somali boy Hasan who wants to prepare a surprise feast for his mother. With the help of the local Imam, Hasan is able to gather the community for this magnificent Bismillah Soup through generosity and reliance on Allah! We love the diversity of the book and learning new terms from the Somali culture – there’s a glossary at the back of the book too! Best of all is when we use this book to make our own Bismillah Soup! It’s a beautiful book – your children will love it!

Talaal and the Whispering Worrier is a wonderful book about emotions, nerves and anxiety and how to tackle them. Talaal’s sister teaches Talaal how to keep calm and to fight back the whispering worrier through helpful thoughts and reciting Quran. Its an excellent story to follow up with kids with natural tendencies to worry and even better for parents to help their children who feel this way. Highly recommend it!

Simple activity on finding the stages of the life cycle of a dandelion - the girls went into the garden to find the different stages. They enjoyed learning about seed dispersal and found dandelion growing in different places and we discussed how the seeds could have reached on top of a roof or the guttering.
.
The girls had to then write the stages from the perspective of the flower which they actually enjoyed! Same activity just differentiated by supporting Hibah, whilst Ammarah worked independently.

Dinosaurs have always been a favourite of Hibah’ Dinosaurs have always been a favourite of Hibah’s and now that she enjoys reading somewhat (Alhamdulillah) she wanted to re-read her dinosaur book and from that we went into some spoken poetry and then the start of her poem which was very catchy and we all joined in!
.
.
Hibah (who just turned 8) has been a bit of reluctant reader. Although she likes books and likes listening to stories, she just wasn’t as bothered with reading. Maths on the other hand was more her thing but as time went on, she had to read word problems or questions in order to understand the question and that’s when she was fine to read. So, for so long her journey towards reading has been one in which she navigated herself mainly because I didn’t want to put her off reading altogether, so we went at her pace. It certainly was very different to her elder sister, Ammarah’s journey. Having said that she’s picked up words faster and comprehends well. She’s full of creative ideas and never falls short in plot twists and interesting characters for her oral or written short stories! Will be sharing more on this soon.
.
Do you have a reluctant reader at home? How do you encourage them to connect with stories or books without putting them off reading altogether?
.
P.s if you listen to the end you can hear Nusaybah too 😃 mashaAllah

On Motherhood - Giving birth after 7 years feels On Motherhood -

Giving birth after 7 years feels like we are new parents again, except this time a little calmer and perhaps wiser. No doubt the challenges will still be waiting for us, but we got used to being parents and are mentally prepared and accepting of life with kids and babies. For first time parents it’s a whole other ball game. There’s a lot of growing up to do - fast! Being responsible for a tiny human is a huge deal but there’s so much love and self growth to take from it.
.
Motherhood takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions, inner battles, identity crisis and more - it challenges us in every way but Alhamdulillah with it comes tiny mini versions of ourselves - the ultimate way we are tested to continue on our journeys of being better versions of ourselves!
.
Currently, Nusaybah is nearly 3 months old Alhamdulillah- we are adjusting to life with 3 kids. She’s curious already - the girls read to her and want to include her in everything they do when relevant. They ask if she will be homeschooled too and calculate how old they will be when she is 3 or 5 etc.
.
For so long, I was used to just 2 girls and our family felt complete Alhamdulillah, but the girls always wondered about another sibling as they saw new additions to their extended family each year. Sometimes it’s a bit surreal that Nusaybah is here with us, a blessing from Allah in every way Alhamdulillah- I think it’s a lesson that we still can’t plan or see our life only through our lens - ultimately it will be Allah’s plans that prevail - Allahu Akbar!

After our germination experiment last week we had After our germination experiment last week we had to look at the ayats in the Quran where Allah talks about the splitting of the seed.
.
Ammarah’s extra task was to write a poem based on what we found out from the Quran. A lot of the poems on nature that we have are absolutely beautiful but we need reminding that the beauty and design of nature is all from Allah. And so we reflected on the ayat from the Quran which prompted us to ponder upon the seeds that we sow. And so she included it in her poem.
.
We loved using the beautiful Connecting with Allah book by @zacandaslam as well. Swipe to see the prompts and poetry plan.
.
.
How often do we connect with Allah through nature? Do we remember that is Allah who decides if our seeds will grow each year? Have you had a bad harvest one year? Don’t let that stop you from growing the following year - subhanAllah our rizq is from Allah!

Sometimes you just need to have a vision and the i Sometimes you just need to have a vision and the intention and then say Bismillah. Allah facilitates Alhamdulillah.
.
This vision for a secret garden (essentially a garden space for us to be immersed in nature contemplating and reflecting on Allah’s creation - our very own sit spot) emerged in Ramadan during the Outdoor Madrassah Course I took. Unable to trek to a park with a new born, I wanted a sit spot in the garden and attract more bees and butterflies and essentially wildlife by planting our favourite plants and flowers. Being in a city/town with concrete buildings we need the greenery and to be outdoors in nature to really ponder on Allah’s signs!
.
I’m loving our progress so far Alhamdulillah - we’ve learnt so much along the way ourselves - it’s still@not finished it’s a work in progress and I complete reminding myself to Trust the Process in sha Allah 😃

Germinating Seeds 🌱 . In our homeschool this Germinating Seeds 🌱
.

In our homeschool this past week, we’ve been looking at seeds. Finding seeds in our spice drawers and larder and looking at ayaat from the Quran about seeds. (More on that soon)
.
The girls spotted seed dispersal outside with dandelions growing in drains 😅 and our sycamore tree sending its seeds all the way to our patio (we’ve seen sycamore seedlings 🌱 in our patio pots as we were weeding) To see the process of splitting seeds, we’ve been doing this germinating experiment. Swipe to see the differentiated experiment write up.

Do you germinate seeds on paper towels before you plant in soil or do you plant straight into soil? This year we’ve been enjoying experimenting with both methods!

We’ve had a nice slow paced week to enjoy the time sowing seeds and prepare our kitchen garden on the patio. There’s been a lot of rain though 🌧️ so we’ve had to move some pots back and forth 😅 praying we get some crops this year. It’s worked out perfectly with a nearly 3 month old - we are getting there slowly Alhamdulillah.

What started as a test for the family of Ibrahim ( What started as a test for the family of Ibrahim (as) in the early lands of Makkah has now become the lands to which our Ummah flocks to. Towards the end of my pregnancy this year, I was i Towards the end of my pregnancy this year, I was in full on nesting mode. We did a thorough clean when we got back to England of our cupboards and room and got rid of a lot of unnecessary junk! Cleaning videos are great inspiration to get you motivated if you need it.
.
The kitchen cupboards also needed work and were completely disorganised with spices taking over the larder! So nesting mode continued after baby Nusaybah was born. I finally decided to tackle that larder full of spices- in fact I decided to move all the spices to a whole new location (into its own pull out drawer under the hob) and kept the dolmio and pasta bottles we recycled and instead just designed some stickers to cover up and organise the jars.
.
It’s really transformed my cooking experience and time spent in the kitchen just because it’s all in an easy to reach location and organised! There’s a few more areas to sort still but Alhamdulillah happy with the progress so far!
