Planet Omar by Zanib Mian

Planet Omar is a brilliant chapter book written by Zanib Mian. Although I’d originally bought it as a read aloud, my 6 year old loved reading it. She loved how funny it was and the fact that it was about a Muslim kid! The book goes through the life of Omar at his new school, a bully, Eid festivals and family. It’s a great one to buy for your kids getting into chapter books!

The Proudest Blue by Ibtihaj Muhammad

The Proudest Blue is a beautiful book about the first-day of hijab. It tells the story of a younger sister looking up to her older sister as she begins wearing the hijab. The story tackles hurtful words through mama’s advice and being proud of who you are. It’s a gem of a book and an important one for your bookshelf!

If Allah Wills by Dr. Oz

If Allah Wills is a beautiful book about young Faris who wants to go to the Ka’bah. Similar to children’s favourite ‘Whatever Next’, Faris sets on a journey to the Ka’bah and finds out what Muslims do there. The book is really well written with beautiful illustrations and a whole lot of imagination! This would be a great gift for families visiting for Umrah!

Treasures of Jannah by Yasmin Egala

Treasures of Jannah is about twins Adam and Hana who are visiting their Grandma for the weekend. Instead of their usual story time, their Grandma begins to tell them about a very special place – Jannah. A beautiful book about Grandparents, story telling and Jannah. It’s just the book you need when you want to start telling your children about Jannah.

Bismillah Soup by Asmaa Hussein

Bismillah Soup has to be one of my girls’ favourite books. The story is about a young Somali boy Hasan who wants to prepare a surprise feast for his mother. With the help of the local Imam, Hasan is able to gather the community for this magnificent Bismillah Soup through generosity and reliance on Allah! We love the diversity of the book and learning new terms from the Somali culture – there’s a glossary at the back of the book too! Best of all is when we use this book to make our own Bismillah Soup! It’s a beautiful book – your children will love it!

Talaal and the Whispering Worrier by Shereeza Boodhoo

Talaal and the Whispering Worrier is a wonderful book about emotions, nerves and anxiety and how to tackle them. Talaal’s sister teaches Talaal how to keep calm and to fight back the whispering worrier through helpful thoughts and reciting Quran. Its an excellent story to follow up with kids with natural tendencies to worry and even better for parents to help their children who feel this way. Highly recommend it!

My first book of Islamic Months is a wonderful book to help our teach our kids (and us) about the Islamic Months. This beautiful lift the flap and fold out book is a must have for your bookshelves. Basirah the Basketballer says Insha’Allah by Hafsah Dabiri

This wonderful story takes you through the important lesson of knowing everything that happens, happens by Allah’s will. It’s a fantastic way to introduce our kids to the word Insha’Allah and learn what it means. The story features a young girl Basirah who really wants to be chosen captain of her Basketball team, but along the way she learns lessons of friendship and being a team player. This is such a brilliant book for our kids to understand how dua and the words Insha’Allah are used in our lives. Highly recommend it!

It’s World Book Day 2021 and every year the girl It’s World Book Day 2021 and every year the girls like to dress up as their favourite book characters - this year we left it a little last minute (last night) but they managed to find all they needed to dress up as the characters Hidayah and Sara from the Jannah Jewels Series @jannahjewels 🤩🤩
.
.
The girls absolutely love the @jannahjewels series and I was so pleased they picked to dress up as these characters. They can relate to the characters and imagine the adventures they are on with them.
.
.
In the past they’ve been Peter Rabbit, Lilly Bobtail, Red riding Hood and the Hungry Caterpillar 😄
.
.
Do your children dress up on world book day? How do you celebrate reading on this day and beyond?

There was something about the sunshine last week - There was something about the sunshine last week - it was just the light we needed after a dark cold and lockdown filled winter. The joy of being out in nature (although it was super packed here too) made it all the more beautiful 🤩
.
.
We rested well, hibernated in our homes mostly 🙈 but now Spring awaits us iA. As the seasons change we prepare again, but this time the preparation is for the blessed month of Ramadan. With over a month away it’s another ease Allah has sent our way. Alhamdulillah❤️
.
.
Before the preparations begin for the home, the kids or the iftaars and family - take some time out for yourself Mamas and write down what you look forward most to this Ramadan. Write your dua list. Write your reading list. Write the habits you want to instil in yourself, Quran you want to read, Islamic series you want to listen to, bucket list of good deeds you want to do.
.
.
Have you started YOUR Ramadan Preparation? Share what you’re upto below - let’s encourage one another iA ❤️

The girls have always been intrigued by Roman Nume The girls have always been intrigued by Roman Numerals especially with many of our wall clocks displaying them too. We finally had a read around the different letters that represent each number and the patterns formed to help us remember which number is which.
.
We used the fun stencils in the Roman Activity book - (history x crafts = ideal way of learning) to make a long display poster which the eldest has used for her @twinklresources Roman numeral mosaic challenges. Swipe to see more! Combining Maths with our topics.
.
.
Many a time we link in maths to our unit studies - we use the context of the unit to set the maths problem scene. In this topic it worked perfectly. We also introduced geometry, angles, shape and pattern in this topic too

Roman Mosaics - one of our activities last week wa Roman Mosaics - one of our activities last week was to make a Roman mosaic tile. We had a little look at the different patterns that came in the pack (available on Amazon - Type Roman Style Mosaic Coaster Kit)
.
The eldest chose a symmetrical pattern ensuring she carefully put each tile in the correct place like the picture. The youngest on the other hand made a random coloured pattern (swipe to see) which is a true reflection of her creativity and speed to whiz through a craft and it came out beautifully too mA.
.
.
The beauty of our children is that they are so different and unique in their own way. In the same way our teaching methods, homeschooling and parenting journeys will be so different and unique to each of us. The best part is we can all learn from each other and be inspired by the differences between us. Accepting and tolerating that people are different to you and that’s ok- it doesn’t diminish from who you are and what your approach is - this is pretty much what I’ve had to teach my children when they notice their different approaches to learning, playing or just being.
.
Back to the tiles - highly recommend this pack, swipe to see what was included 🙂

Early into our Ancient Rome Studies we started rea Early into our Ancient Rome Studies we started reading this book (mostly as a read aloud and at times the eldest read some paragraphs too) - it’s a fabulous book for young readers with simple language and rich vocabulary allowing our children to learn new words etc too. We recommend it for 7-10yr olds. We read relevant chapters in between our crafts and role play to learn more about how the Emperor Julius Ceaser became emperor. We didn’t follow up with any writing but simply enjoyed the power of read alouds, discussion and questions.
. Swipe to see the chapters and inside. Thank you @letslearnmama for recommending this series love it- ❤️

Writing - it’s a tricky one for young kids. The Writing - it’s a tricky one for young kids. The whole process of symbols on paper (handwriting) ideas to paper (processing thought) and just feeling stuck as soon as they see a writing task. I’ve seen this amongst children I’ve taught at school, children I’ve tutored and now my own. So I’ve emphasised speaking, reading, comprehension, language and discussing more. Of course all children are different and so in our homeschool we write when we are in the mood!
.
.
Today’s writing task (actually it’s been a pending task since we made our Roman Villa) was to imagine you were a Roman slave working in the Rich Roman’s Villa. Write a letter home to your parents in England about your job, how you feel, describing the villa and people too. But guess what she wasn’t in the mood 🙈 she said “I don’t like writing, I like maths!”
.
.
So we began with some positive affirmations “I am an amazing writer” and repeated this a few times- The 7 year old used an adjectives chart, we made a spider diagram together of what she would include as I introduced paragraph writing (in basic detail) and reluctantly wrote the letter. In the end she was proud of it as she persevered to the end anyway and chose the name Andrew (as it sounded closest to Ammarah 😅)
.
.
The point also is there was a time she didn’t think she was good at maths and enjoyed writing more 😅🙈 and that’s why we write depending on our moods (I definitely do that as an adult) and felt it only fair on the kids this way too!
.
.
What are your thoughts on your children’s writing whether you homeschool or not? Share with us below - how do you encourage your children to feel confident when they feel they aren’t good at something?

The past week we got off timetable completely to e The past week we got off timetable completely to enjoy some family time and the one thing that gave me pure joy was DIY. I think the girls see my enthusiasm for DIY and want to join me too. So I took a solo trip to @bandq_uk yesterday as we work on our garden project. Picked up some bargain masonry rollers and small ones for the kids too plus brushes and our chosen paint.
.
I was surprised the girls kept painting with me until the end. There’s still another coat needed, but the good weather plus garden time made it a lovely afternoon!

As we really enjoy our history units we decided it was time to draw up a history timeline putting our studies into context. From when Rome was built to when Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was born, when Mansa Musa went for Hajj to when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus. The girls enjoyed adding their own birthdays to their history timeline too.

.
We also love making use of @twinklresources and the stories and comprehension activities they offer. It’s always helped us tremendously when we lived in Saudi, being able to access texts and books with ease digitally. It’s an essential part of our Homeschool too.
.
.
We read through the story of Romulus and Remus last week which I remember since childhood surprisingly- but it was great revisiting it. We spoke about myths and the kind of stories they are. There was a lot of discussion about whether babies can be raised by a wolf (the girls also made references to Tarzan 🙈) and that Romulus was wrong to kill his brother.

When we first moved to England we were so excited about libraries and just having a huge selection of books for our reading and projects. Well we all know what’s happening and why that isn’t possible 🙈 but on the brighter side, being intentional about the books we would most likely use and trying to stick within a budget has made it quite an enjoyable experience. Of course we weren’t just limited to books but we loved the collection we do have. The usbourne Roman Villa and Amphitheater cut out models are superb and can’t wait to show you what we’ve made!
.
If your planning an Ancient Roman Unit - highly recommend everything in this post don’t forget to SAVE it - all available on Amazon 🙂

Ancient Rome - the first thing the girls wanted we Ancient Rome - the first thing the girls wanted were Roman Soldier outfits and swords as soon as our books started arriving. Ideally I thought it would be a great sewing project but of course non-essential shops are closed lately. But we took to Amazon and found all we needed. They’ve made multiple use of the red capes (they use them as superhero capes too) and have been practising some sword fighting 🤺
.
By using their senses and a little imagination they always feel a little more like they’ve stepped back in time. Now all their usual small world Lego friends have stepped back in time into Ancient Rome too 😁

New unit study- Ancient Rome! . After our last un New unit study- Ancient Rome!
.
After our last unit study on the Natural World - the girls became curious about the Romans after we talked about the Roman ruins in England etc - we decided to change course completely and planned our Ancient Rome Study! Whilst realising how much there is available for us to go and visit in England, sadly the lockdown means for now it won’t be possible but we live with the hope that things change in summer allowing us to visit the Roman Baths and ruins in St Albans and more.
.
.
So here’s a little snippet of our plan and ideas - it’s always nice to get things on paper and look at what’s possible to do and what isn’t- the best part is collating the ideas with the kids - for this particular unit study, we are hoping to immerse all our senses into Life in Ancient Rome and look forward to sharing with you all.

For so long I thought I had done so well mentally For so long I thought I had done so well mentally and emotionally regardless of our move back to England, Covid restrictions on seeing family and now a 2nd, 3rd of 4th lockdown (I’ve lost count) but wow these are testing times! I needed a moment to process everything, I forgot to journal these huge changes and adjustments and then last week it all came tumbling down. I thought I could beat the lockdown blues, I’ve stayed positive, looked on the bright side of things but it got to me.
.
And that’s ok- I finally told myself .
.
I needed to feel vulnerable, know that so much is beyond our control and once the dust settles remind myself Allah is in charge.
.
.
Yes there’s still so much to be grateful for but we can also be sad about what’s changed - it’s ok to feel this way. It’s difficult no doubt but we pray for better days iA. Allah sent His blessings through beautiful kind souls looking out for each other on Rainier days - the glimpse of light in all the chaos. @shade7_ thank you for the suprise lunch @nurturing.learners thank you for the surprise gift @phlyy_art @thefragranceangel @asma_scribendi @sabah.gilani @spiritedjournal thank you all for just being you and listening to me and checking in ❤️❤️
.
.
One thing that’s usually helped me during all this has been my space on here on Instagram- the community I’ve known for years, the kindness that Allahs sent through so many of you and whilst I needed to take some time out, I also really missed being able to share and talk to you all. Thank you for checking up on me and asking (sorry for those I haven’t got back to yet) I appreciate you all. If you’re having a rough few days please DM if you just want to chat - I feel like after all the good that Allah sent my way last week I need to now send back to those who may need it too.

In a geography/science based topic such as this on In a geography/science based topic such as this one - The Natural World, sometimes you have to think outside the box and a little creatively to get some exciting writing in. And for us pretend play works well. A science experiment, combined with role play and a show and a newspaper report write up. Volcano kit by @natgeokidsuk (available on Amazon) - definitely worth the buy!
.
I always find writing different genres or just writing in general for little children quite some work so my advice would be get them excited, get some imagination juices flowing and lots of talking about what is happening BEFORE the writing takes place. You could always write questions for them to help them bring structure to their writing too - zoom in to read what happened! (Template available soon in upcoming resource)
.
The girls enjoyed giving their toy lego people a lava bath in the end - sensory play at its finest 😂
